The origin of the scarf can be dated all the way back to ancient Egyptian times where it is said that Queen Nefertiti wore a woven scarf under her jewelled headpiece for protection. Fast forward to the 19^th century, the French political leader Napoleon Bonaparte gifted his wife a pashmina scarf on his travels from Egypt. While she was initially sceptical of this exotic accessory, she quickly fell in love with its beauty and reportedly amassed a collection of 400 scarves worth over €100,000 over the following three years. However, it was Queen Victoria in 1842 who cemented the scarf as an iconic accessory. She frequently adorned glamorous silk scarves while on the throne, increasing their popularity among the nobility. Soon after, wearing a silk scarf served as a means of signifying people of the upper-class. Nevertheless, the evolution of the scarf into a fashion necessity was not without obstacles.

With the approach of the 20^th century so too came the war. The scarf moved from an elegant fashion accessory to a practical clothing piece for soldiers to keep warm in the trenches. High ranking officers were gifted silk scarves which also doubled as a tool to transport gunpowder. As a result of this double function, five million square feet of silk per month was shipped to soldiers in America. Subsequently, at the end of the war, there was an excess of silk remaining with no purpose. This material was then reinvested into the fashion industry where Liberty London and Hermes took the lead in producing handsewn silk scarves. Liberty London began creating light silk scarves which were popularized with their vibrant and colourful patterns boosting post-war spirits. While in 1937, Hermes created their first handsewn silk scarf which reflected the equestrian style that continues to be rooted in the Hermes style to this day.

From there, silk scarves rapidly grew in popularity. This rise was mainly due to their appearance in movies, particularly on actresses Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Both women were regularly pictured wearing their chic Hermes silk scarves in beautiful locations such as Monaco and New York. With Audrey Hepburn being the fashion icon of the 1950’/60’s, scarves became the ‘it’ accessory symbolizing female glamour, power, and independence. This symbolism became common knowledge with Audrey proclaiming that “When I wear a silk scarf, I never feel so definitely like a woman a beautiful woman”. This famous quote propelled the popularity of scarves with everybody eager to imitate Audrey Hepburn.

However, silk was an expensive material and only afforded by the wealthy. At the end of the 1960’s, the much cheaper rayon/viscose material made scarves much more accessible. With this accessibility, scarves moved from a fine art design worn only by the upper-class to a more practical use of clothing, afforded by all. Nowadays, scarves are a versatile accessory utilized for both practical use and style. High fashion designers continue to produce luxurious silk scarves reflective of their insignias while other fashion designers use more affordable materials (wool, rayon or viscose) and create vibrant, colourful scarves accessible by all.
